My sentimental old Earrings.
Daily writing prompt
What’s the oldest things you’re wearing today?

The oldest thing I’m wearing today is my jewelry, specifically my earrings. I honestly don’t know how old they are. Sometimes, I have seasons where I’ll wear them. Then, for years on end, I’ll put them away and not wear them again. But I’m thinking that they’re almost 18 years old—who knows?

I kept them for so long because they were a gift—I believe they were a graduation gift. Because they were gifts, I often treat some of my gifts as the most precious things in the world. When I received these particular earrings, I decided to store them in a jewelry box. I told myself I would only wear them on some special occasion.

The earrings are teardrop-shaped and feature a burgundy-looking gem accented with gold framing. I think they’re gold. They probably might be some percentage of carat of gold. Out of all the jewelry that I bought, this is the only one that hasn’t tarnished.

I always reach for these particular earrings because they seem reliable. Because of when they were made, they possibly have more longevity than jewelry made now. The craftsmanship of many mass-produced products today isn’t like it was even 10 years ago.

These are my go-tos when I want to go out on a special occasion. Even if the colors don’t match my dress, they always give me a sense of accomplishment. They give sturdiness that no other piece of jewelry usually gives me.

I’ve worn them to parties, graduations, dinner dates, and occasionally work. I wear them to work on days when I just don’t feel like myself. These particular earrings make me feel a bit more grounded. This feeling comes from how long I’ve had them and how long I’ve lovingly worn them.
