Hey, so this is another Stream of Consciousness and post for Saturday. So the word promt is pant/pent/pint/pont/punt.
I guess this post is sort of a follow-up to last week’s posts about walking. I have also been strength training. Weight training is really, really hard, but I like it. I have done it for maybe six years, and I like it because I am able to get a workout and get stronger. I accomplished something because I can see myself gradually getting stronger.
It’s also a way for me to get rid of some pent-up frustration because just putting 100% of my effort into lifting something heavy and putting it back down is cathartic. So weight training for me does not help at all with weight loss, even though there’s like some sort of statistic that says that if you weight train, at rest, you’re still burning calories. I don’t see that, but I do feel good afterwards, and it’s an activity that’s just very relaxing.
I mostly do low-impact weight training. Over the years, I have developed knee pain from just living and the impact of time and gaining weight. I can’t run or jump. It’s just really hard on my knees. Me and high-impact cardio are not friends.
I’m proud of my efforts in weight training. As it stands right now, I can lift close to 80 pounds without assistance. I would like to one day be able to lift and move 150 pounds. But that’s an ambition. It depends on how much time I have to dedicate because so far, I’ve only been able to work out three times a week for about 30 minutes.
I only have dumbbells, so with dumbbells, the effort to get that strong with just dumbbells is pretty hard. I’d have to switch to barbells one day, which I don’t have the space for, and I don’t really have the time to go to a gym and wait on a machine to do all that.
Maybe I’ll just pick another ambition, like I’ve been thinking about yoga or maybe Pilates, to work on more flexible and functional fitness. I know being adaptable and maintaining your flexibility is another important thing to do, so maybe I’ll look into that or something else. Who knows?
